Gone West: Model Airplane Craftsman Franklin Robert 'Bud' Nosen

Credited With Bringing Large-Scale Model Airplanes To The Masses

Our friends at Lee Bottom Flying Field in southern Indiana posted in the blog NORDO News that Franklin Robert 'Bud' Nosen, who is credited in the model airplane community with bringing large-scale model airplanes "to the masses," passed away on November 13 at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN.

Rich Davidson of Lee Bottom Flying Field wrote in the blog "If you ever flew radio control aircraft, or you still do, then I'm sure you know the name. I still wish I had kept that 1/4 scale Champ.  I wonder where it is today?"

In an obituary posted in the Duluth News Tribune, Nosen was remembered as a husband and father of three.

He established Bud Nosen Models in Two Harbors, MN in 1970, and ran the business for many years. The family said "In honor of Bud, please take an extra day to fly your model airplane, throw an extra cast into the lake, enjoy a long nap ... and be grateful for all you have."

Nosen was 78 years old. The obituary said he succumbed to cancer.
