One Of Two Lion Air Flight 610 'Black Boxes' Recovered

Device Located In About 98 Feet Of Water

One of two "black boxes" from Lion Air Flight 610, the Boeing 737 MAX which went down shortly after takeoff from Jakarta, Indonesia, has been recovered from about 98 feet of water.

The device was found by divers who had to dig into the sea bed to find the device, according to Senior Chief Petty Officer Hendra. The New York Times reports that the recorder was located by pings transmitted from the device after the airplane went down.

Soerjanto Tjahjono, the head of the National Transportation Safety Committee, which is leading the crash investigation, would only confirm that they had found one of the two devices. The Indonesian Navy had initially said that it was the Flight Data Recorder, but that was not confirmed. However, USA Today reports that, according to Bambang Irawan, an investigator with the National Transport Safety Commission, the recovered device was the FDR.

The recorder had been dislodged from its metal casing by the force of the accident, according to the report. Search teams have not yet located the Cockpit Voice Recorder.
