Florida Homeowner Waiting For Insurance Decision On House Damaged By An Airplane

Accident Happened Over Three Months Ago, But No Progress Has Been Made

Homeowner Susan Crockett was in one of the bedrooms in her Palm Coast, FL, home January 4 when an airplane came through the roof of the house. Crockett managed to escape the house through a back window. The three occupants of the airplane were fatally injured.

Fast forward to today. The house still sits on its lot virtually unchanged from the time the fire department put out the fire. And the city of Palm Coast is threatening to tear down the structure and send Crockett the bill.

Crockett said through her attorney that the reason nothing has been done is because they are still waiting for a decision from an insurance company to determine what should be done with the property. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that attorney Marc Dwyer said a resolution is "going to come fairly soon," and added that the insurance company has "not been uncooperative" during the process.

Dwyer said that his client will not live in the home again, and is unlikely to live "anywhere an airplane flies over or near an airport." He said she has suffered physical and psychological injuries from the incident.

The Palm Coast code enforcement board next meets July 3, and will determine how to proceed if nothing has been done by Crockett by that time.
