Aero-TV: EDM At I/ITSEC 2016: Real-Time Defence Training Simulation

Commercial Off-The-Shelf Components Bring Down Costs

Flight simulator technology is on the forefront of combining disparate technologies into a single system to give a realistic experience to pilots operating the sims.

Speaking to ANN CEO and editor in chief Jim Campbell at the Interservice Industry Training Simulation & Education Conference (I/ITSEC) conference late last year, Mick Bonney, Sales Director for EDM Ltd that one of their latest products brings together a real-time IG flight model based on the Hawk training jet into a system that even includes a g-suit inflate/deflate system.

The heart of the system is the G-Seat, he said. The company is using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment in the simulator, including drives and gearboxes adapted from the automotive industry. High-speed computers mean there is no latency between control input and what the pilot sees and feels in the simulation.

While the current system is for the Hawk trainer, Bonney said that the company is also developing a sim for the Typhoon, and hopes to be involved in the F-35 program. But he said the system can also be retrofitted for air forces that might have passed on such technology in the past due to cost, he said.
