Passengers Injured After Indonesian Airliner Slides Of Runway

Plane Was Reportedly Landing In Rain

At least 13 people onboard a CASA 212 turboprop were injured Monday after their plane overran the runway at an airport on the eastern Indonesian island of Banda.

Local media sources report rain and storms in the area when the regional airliner attempted to land Monday morning. The Antara News agency said the plane's wings, landing gear, and engine were damaged in the accident.

The Merpati Nusantara plane was arriving from the town of Masohi on Seram Island, said Abdullah Akhir, chief of a local medical clinic that was treating the victims. None of the injuries appeared serious, he added.

A spokesman for the airline said there were 14 passengers on the airliner, plus a crew of three. Representatives with Merpati Nusantara were enroute to investigate.
