Hong Kong Airlines May Cancel A380 Over Over ETS

Carrier Has 10 Superjumbos On Order

The ongoing saber-rattling between Europe and the world's airlines over the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme has kicked up a notch, as Hong Kong Airlines said it is considering cancelling an order for 10 A380 superjumbo airliners.

The carrier is a subsidiary of Chinese Carrier Hainan Airlines. The French news service AFP reports that Hong Kong Airlines president Yang Jianhong told the South China Morning Post that "(w)e cannot do something which is against our country's interest."

The first A380 is scheduled for delivery to Hong Kong Airlines in 2015. So far, there has been no official change in the status of the order, according to an Airbus spokesperson based in Singapore.

China is one of several countries including the U.S., Russia, and India which have formally protested the unilateral imposition of a carbon tax by the EU on foreign-flagged airliners. The ETS went into effect January 1st, though no taxes will be collected until 2013.
