California Pilot Convicted Of Lying To The FAA

Falsified Information About A Medical Condition

A California pilot has been found guilty on two counts of making false statements to the FAA, and two counts of falsifying, concealing or covering up material facts, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

The East Bay Times reports that Nicholas Beyer, 34, was found guilty following a half-day bench trial in U.S. District Court. Beyer has stated on airman medical certificate applications that he had never been diagnosed with any mental disorder. However, the Department of Veterans Affairs diagnosed him with a major depressive disorder in 2016.

He also concealed the fact that he was receiving disability benefits for the depressive disorder diagnosis.

Byer was indicted on August 23, 2018 by a federal grand jury. He could face penalties of a $250,000 fine and five years in prison, along with possible restitution for each count.

Sentencing is set for April 22.
