Olympic Sprint Canoeist Fatally Injured In South Africa Accident

Mark Perrow Was Flying A Sling Airplane Monitoring A Canoe Race

A well-known Olympic-caliber sprint canoeist was fatally injured Sunday when the Sling airplane he was piloting went down during the Nyala Pans to St Elmos race on the Umkomaas River.

Mark Perry was monitoring the race from the airplane, according to a report from the North Coast Courier newspaper. First responders were called when canoeists reported seeing a light airplane go down in the Umkomazi Valley, near Richmond.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said some members of the rescue teams paddled about a mile and a half down the river where an operations center was established. Other rescue teams were flown into the base. “Members had to gain access to the crash site along the cliff ledges and dense bush,” Captain Gwala said.

Perrow's body was recovered at about 8:00 p.m. local time Sunday evening, according to the report. He was the only person on board the airplane.
