Last January, Congress passed the National Defense Appropriations Act, which included funding to close the St. Marys airport in southeast Georgia.

The airport is now slated to close, permanently, no later than July 14. The airport is reportedly closing because of its long-time proximity to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, with the Feds explaining that the airport has been a security concern since 9/11. The city had supposedly been unable to close the airport because of its obligations under the federal AIP program. More to the point; they were unwilling to pay the estimated $5 million in FAA penalties to close the airport. The Faribault, MN city council voted unanimously, last week, to rename its local airport "Faribault Municipal Airport – Liz Wall Strohfus Field" in a fitting honor for the city's most famous aviator. The name change was proposed by the American Association of University Women in Faribault. Strohfus was one of the pioneering women who helped the war effort during WWII by joining the Women's Air Force Service Pilots (WASPs). She led the fight to get those women recognized as veterans. A Chicago-area woman has won a battle over a sample of moon dust collected by Neil Armstrong during the first lunar landing. Nancy Lee Carlson acquired the sample by placing a winning bid of $995 in a U.S. Marshal's auction last year. She sent the sample, which had been placed in a small bag by Armstrong shortly after returning to Earth, to NASA to confirm its authenticity. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
