Smoke -- and 650 Miles to Go

Air Canada 747 Has Dicey Flight

Imagine yourself 650 miles out... and you smell smoke. Worse: your passengers do, too.

That's what happened Monday to the 13 members of an Air Canada crew, in charge of a 747-400 and 269 PAX.

The passengers were aware of the smoke, yet remained calm, as the US Navy sent an escort. The Air Canada captain had declared an emergency at 3:27PM local time... by 4:05, the smoke was no longer evident. Had the fire burned through, and the cabin pressure blown the smoke out? It was going to be a long flight to Iceland.

The origin of the smoke has not been isolated; but the good news is that the big bird made it safely to Keflavik International, in Reykjavik. Not one passenger or crew member was hurt, according to the Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration.
