SpaceX Fairing Recovery Ships Return To Port Canaveral

Spacecraft Parts Were On Board When They Arrived In Port, But Things Apparently Got Rough

Ms. Tree and Ms. Chief, the two recovery ships SpaceX hopes will be able to regularly bring back payload fairings from launch operations, returned to Port Canaveral in Florida Thursday with the fairings from Monday's satellite launch. But the boats looked like they had had a difficult time of it.

While the operation to catch falling spacecraft parts using nets on ships was at least partially successful, according to Telsarati, one of the arm supports on Ms. Chief appeared to be missing when captured by Telsarati photographer Richard Angle.

Ms. Tree was also not unscathed. The secondary net that is used to scoop fairings out of the ocean was torn in several places, and the fairing half that was recovered by Ms. Tree looked as if it had fallen to the deck.

SpaceX remains committee to perfecting its technique for capturing falling fairings and reusing them. But for now, it would seem that there are still a few bugs in the system.
