Hawaiian Aviation Businesses Seek Reimbursement For Obama Visit

20 Companies Claim Two-Week TFR Cost Them Cash

A group of 20 small aviation businesses in Hawaii are seeing $200,000 in compensation from the White House for business they say was lost during President Obama's holiday vacation in the islands.

Presidential TFR December 2009

The President and his family rented a house in Kailua for two weeks in December, and a TFR severely restricted any private air operations within a 10 mile radius of the home. The Associated Press reports that the Oahu Aviation Initiative, a coalition made up of 20 businesses, says it is seeking the $200,000 as compensation for lost revenue during that period.

The businesses include air tour operators, flight schools, and others who depend on the ability to fly for their livelihood. The companies also say they want to meet with government officials to discuss ways to be sure they don't run into a similar problem should the President again choose Hawaii as a vacation destination.
