Airservices Australia Embarks On Tower Modernization Program

Signs Saab And NAV CANADA For Work At Four Airports

Technology provided jointly by Saab Corporation and NAV CANADA has been selected by Airservices Australia for their air traffic control towers at the Gold Coast, Perth, Cairns and Brisbane airports as part of the second phase of their tower modernization program.

NAV CANADA is providing a modified version of its NAVCANsuite of ATC tools called INTAS, and Saab will provide overall project management and system integration as well as integration of surface automation tools.

The Integrated Tower Automation Suite (INTAS) combines flight data, operational data, surveillance, and airfield lighting control, providing air traffic controllers with an environment that enhances safety and efficiency, and reduces controller workload.

INTAS is already in operational service at Airservices control towers at Broome, Rockhampton, Adelaide and Melbourne airports.

"INTAS allows Airservices controllers to continue to move from a manual, paper-based system to a harmonized suite of ATC systems and capabilities, right at their fingertips," said Mark Rodwell, Airservices Executive General Manager Projects and Engineering. "The system supports increased situational awareness of the aircraft and runways, enhancing the safety of the environment."

"Saab has a long history of deploying air traffic control technologies to Airservices," said Patrick Fitzgerald, Director CNS Projects and Programs. "This new contract extends our partnership with NAV CANADA, and working closely with Airservices, we will continue to deliver this industry-leading air traffic control tower system."

"We are pleased that INTAS has proven to be a successful product for Airservices and that the program is now expanding to other airports that are experiencing growth in air traffic," said Sid Koslow, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for NAV CANADA. "We remain committed to supporting this program with our advanced air traffic management technology and skilled personnel."

Saab will leverage its expertise as an Advanced - Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) provider and integrator and serve as the prime contractor responsible for engineering authority, project management, installation and support organization. NAV CANADA will use its expertise in tower-based Air Traffic Management systems to provide application software, system design, associated development and integration, testing, and training.

INTAS is comprised of a Controller Working Position with up to four touchscreen monitors to display data and common input devices. The system integrates Electronic Flight Strips, Operational Data Management (monitoring and control of airfield ground lighting, navigational aids, weather and other related systems), Digital-Automatic Terminal Information Services, and an Electronic Surveillance System (integrated terminal and surface surveillance) on a common display. Surface surveillance will be provided by the Saab A-SMGCS system.
