Weather Shortens Drone Racing Event In Australia

But Organizer Still Feels The Event Was A Success

The organizer of a drone racing event planned for the town of Ararat in Victoria, Australia was cut short by heavy rains, turning the day into a networking event for pilots.

The Ararat Advertiser reports that the April rain kept flying to just a short practice session. The actual races never got off the ground. But pilot Nathaniel Kuchel, who organized the event for the Grampians Model Flying Club, said that the day was a success despite the weather

Kuchel said that the 20 or so pilots who came for the racing said they had fun and enjoyed catching up with other pilots "They said they were all really keen to come back again next year and hopefully we have better conditions for the next one," Kuchel told the paper.

He said that it was encouraging to see the number of spectators came out to watch drone racing.

Plans are already underway for the 2019 event, which will likely be held at a different time of year in an attempt to avoid the rain and wind that kept flying to a minimum this year. Kuchel said that next year's event would likely be planned for March, before easter, which is still late summer in Australia.
