Airborne 04.08.19: Sun ‘n Fun 2019, Lancair Barracuda, PSA Pilot Pay

Also: NAHA Legislation, Honor Flight DFW, WWII Bomber Found, NAFI-King Schools Scholarship

The latest rendition of the Annual Sun ‘n Fun Fly-In appears to have closed on a high note... with SnF officials reporting record numbers starting with opening day.

Highlights of the event, which was a little short on news and even shorter on decent communication from the vendors attending, started with an amazing non-stop flight by the first US-registered Sling TSi... all the way from Torrance to Florida... some 1900 nautical miles, and a lot of low-altitude flying over the Gulf to avoid serious weather -- along with details on the new Sling Pilot Academy. Piper introduced two new trainers based on the PA-28 series, powered by the new IO-370-D3A engine from recently rebranded Continental Aerospace Technologies. The latest news from Lancair is their new Barracuda - a 2-seat “little brother” to the four-seat Mako. The first Barracuda, N380L, built by first-time Lancair builder Wade Marcantonio, was on display at Lakeland. Barracuda’s design has been developed from the classic Lancair Legacy. The ‘auto-retracting’ nose gear from the Mako adds 10-12 knots to the aircraft's cruise speed, while the nose gear is operated by a fully automatic retraction/extension system that requires no action by the pilot. Pilots for PSA Airlines, represented by ALPA, are  reporting raises for their flight crews. According to Capt. Steven Toothe, chairman of the PSA ALPA Master Executive Council, “Our first officers will see hourly wage rate increases of up to nearly 20 percent above the regional industry average. Our captains will see wage rate increases of up to 12 percent above the regional industry average.” All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
