NMSU, FAA Sign Pact For UAS Testing Center

Will Conduct Gov't, Private Research

New Mexico State University and the FAA have signed an agreement to help establish NMSU as the primary test center for unmanned aircraft systems.

The Associated Press reports the school and the FAA will create an unmanned aircraft systems Flight Test Center for government and private research, development and testing of unmanned systems. The plan, announced last week by US Senator Pete Domenici, includes designated air space in southern New Mexico in which to carry out the work safely.

"This is important research, and the information gained will be important as the need to safely integrate unmanned aircraft into the airspace system increases," Domenici said.

The center will be operated by NMSU's Physical Science Laboratory, and have its headquarters in Las Cruces.
