Seven Lost In Downing Of South Korean UH-1H

Impacted Mountain At Night Near Seoul

All seven persons onboard a South Korean army helicopter were killed in an apparent nighttime controlled flight into terrain accident early Wednesday.

The Associated Press reports the UH-1H (similar to type shown at right) impacted mountainous terrain in Yangpyong, about 25 miles east of Seoul, at around 0140 local time. In addition to the two pilots onboard, the helicopter was transporting two medical officers and three soldiers, according to army official Lt. Col. Ko Dong-hun.

"We are still trying to find out the reason for the crash," he said.

The helicopter was returning to base following a medevac operation to transport a soldier who may have suffered a stroke, according to Reuters. The helicopter lost communications, and disappeared from radar, shortly before the accident.

The UH-1H first saw service in Korea in the mid-1960s, and is still used as a troop and medical transport.
