Latest Space Item Up For Auction Is A Viking Lander Engine

Unfired Rocket Motor Is Said To Be 'Flight Ready'

Another space-related item has shown up on an online auction site. Space buffs who have been hoping to buy a Viking Lander engine are in luck ... if they have sufficient cash in the bank.

The item is described on the RR Auction site as an "unfired flight-ready spare Rocketdyne RS-2101 Liquid Rocket Engine designed for application on the first spacecraft that successfully landed on the Planet Mars as part of Project Viking." The motor was designed not only to boost the lander to Mars, but also slow it down so that it could enter orbit around the planet.

NASA sent two of the Viking spacecraft to Mars, and both touched down in July and September of 1976.

The website says the motor is an "incredibly rare offering for the most discerning space collector, and as close to a flown engine from the project as you will find."

The current bid is $12,885. It will be offered live for bidding Thursday, September 18th at 1500 EDT.
