Classic Aero-TV: Lockheed Flight Services -- Improving Safety for the NAS

From 2014 (YouTube Version): Gearing Up To Meet Tomorrow's FSS/Pilot Requirements

ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell speaks with Jim Derr, the director of aviation services for the Lockheed Martin company. This is the division of Lockheed Martin that provides pilots with flight service station services.

Most pilots are familiar with the typical flight service station briefing obtained over the telephone, but Derr says that the AFSS system is now moving to provide some types of information over the Internet.

Examples of these improvements include an automated adverse condition alerting service and printed documents being written in “plain English” that are easy to read. Another improvement will be the added feature of a reminder for closing flight plans.

Other new and enhanced services are a better system for detecting when an airplane is in trouble. Dear explains how the new system compares to the old system of waiting until an airplane is overdue. This video is full of vital information and graphics that will allow pilots to better understand how flight service station have advanced and modernized since the Lockheed Martin company has taken over this dynamic operation.
