UAV Hours Surpass Piloted Flights For Israeli Air Force

Official Says 'Spectrum Of Tasks Is Growing Bigger'

UAVs now fly more hours for the Israeli Air Force than do piloted aircraft, according to an official with the IAF's UAV department.

Speaking at the 2011 Aerospace Conference last week, Lt. Col. Amir Weiss said "the flight hours of UAVs require a growing amount of missions, made possible by the growth of forces in significant numbers in recent years." Weiss said that UAVs now account for more than 50 percent the IAF's flight hours, a dramatic increase over recent years.

According to the website defpro.com, Weiss said that the unmanned aircraft have become very important to the IAV in terms of the scope of activities performed by the aircraft. "The spectrum of tasks is growing bigger," he said. Missions range from intelligence gathering to close air support for ground troops. He said the possibilities for the UAVs are "endless."
