Boeing Gets Air Force One Contract

Will Build A New Fleet Based On The 747-8

The Pentagon has announced that Boeing has been granted a contract to build a new fleet of Air Force One airplanes based on its new 747-8 platform.

The announcement came in the Pentagon's daily digest of military contract awards.

Reuters reports that the Air Force first announce that the 747-8 would be the platform for new Air Force One airplanes back in January of last year. They will replace two VC-25 airplanes ... modified 747-200B aircraft which are nearing the end of their 30-year lifespan.

The initial contract award totals $25.8 million.

The Boeing 747 is the only U.S. manufactured four-engine jet available for duty as Air Force One. The other option was an Airbus A380, which is manufactured in France.

Shrinking sales of the 747 caused Boeing to announce in September that it would be halving production of the jumbo jets going forward.
