The aircraft was an upgraded "Huey", a UH-1Y known as a Yankee Huey. The accident occurred in a remote mountainous area designated for takeoff and landing practice. The Associated Press reports that Marine Corps Spokesman Sgt. Derek Carlson said the identity of the fatally injured marine was being withheld pending notification of relatives. Of the five others hurt in the accident, at least three were transported to nearby Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla in San Diego. A hospital spokeswoman did not specify the nature or extent of their injuries.

Weather at the time of the accident was reported to be sunny, but hot. An internal investigation of the accident is pending.
