Coast Guard Locates, Rescues Missing Man

Truck Stuck In Mud, Collapsed Trying to Get Help

A Coast Guard aircrew from Air Station Traverse City located and rescued a 70 year-old Michigan man missing since Tuesday.

The unidentified man had been driving near Hessel, MI Tuesday afternoon when his pick-up truck got stuck in the mud. Unable to free it, he attempted to walk to get assistance but collapsed a short distance away on wooded terrain, according to the Coast Guard.

The aircrew launched in a HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter at 11:15 am Thursday and picked up a Mackinaw County Sheriff's Deputy to assist with the search. At 2:42 pm, the Flight Mechanic spotted the man lying on the ground waving a stick.

The crew lowered the Rescue Swimmer to assess his condition, then hoisted him into the helicopter. He was taken to Sanderson Airport in Sault St. Marie, then transferred to a waiting ambulance.
