AMA Announces UAS4STEM National Competition Winners

Brandon Solon Of Canton, GA, Receives The 2018 Dewey O. Broberg Jr. Scholarship

On Saturday, August 18, middle and high school students from across the U.S. competed in the UAS4STEM program’s national competition at the International Aeromodeling Center in Muncie, Indiana. The student teams built their own drones and competed in various flying challenges for a shot at the national title. The challenge is designed to encourage students to learn about the sUAS (drone) phenomenon through teamwork, competition, and success through STEM. The 2018 UAS4STEM Search and Rescue Challenge first place finishers were MMRT (McIntosh Multi-Rotor Team) from Peachtree City, GA, second place finishers QuadoBots are from Great Mills, MD, and third place finishers St. Mary’s Civil Air Patrol Squadron from Leonardtown, MD.

The Dewey O. Broberg Jr. scholarship was also awarded to recognize a team member who showed dedication to his or her team, determination, and adherence to the rules and purpose of the competition. Congratulations to Brandon Solon of Canton, Georgia, the recipient of the 2018 Dewey O. Broberg Jr. scholarship. Brandon attends Creekview High School, and was one of the team members who won both the national and world Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC). Thank you to the family of Dewey O. Broberg Jr. for establishing the Dewey Broberg Most Valuable Engineer scholarship.

UAS4STEM is organized by the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), which is the largest association of model aircraft and drone hobbyists in the country, with roughly 177,000 members. UAS4STEM was designed by the AMA to encourage teamwork, competition, and success through a STEM-based education platform. The UAS4STEM program provides student teams of four to ten people with training, insurance, licensing, and equipment to compete in search-and-rescue challenges. The program is managed by AMA’s Education department as part of AMA Flight School.
