Thai Airways Plans $3.9 Billion Fleet Modernization

23 Airbus, 14 Boeing Aircraft Ordered By The Carrier

Thai Airways plans to modernize its fleet of airplanes, and both Boeing and Airbus will be the richer for the plan.

The Asian carrier said Monday it plans to buy 23 Airbus airplanes, including four A350-900s as well as five A320-200s. The airline will buy six Boeing 777-300ER aircraft as well.

Media sources including Reuters and the French news service AFP report that 22 additional aircraft will be leased, including eight of Boeing's Dreamliners.

Deliveries are scheduled between 2014 and 2017.  The airline said that purchasing modern aircraft "made of non-corrosive composite materials" will reduce maintenance costs and save fuel.
