FAA Faces Another Florida Lawsuit

Family Accuses Controllers Of Contributing To Victim's Death

The family of a Texas doctor is suing the FAA, after he was killed on approach to an airport in north Florida.

Dr. George Swanson died when his Swearingen SA26-AT impacted a grove of trees November 27th, 2003. His four adult children survived the accident.

Swearingen was on approach for landing at Craig Airport, even though he'd been warned by controllers that weather was 100 foot ceilings and one-quarter mile visibility -- below minimums.

WJXT TV reports the suit accuses controllers of failing to warn the pilot that he was too low, didn't advise Swanson of better weather at other fields in the region and had not tested or maintained the IFR system at Craig.

His surviving family wants damages in excess of $75,000, according to the suit.
