FG-1D Corsair Involved In Runway Excursion In Canada

Pilot Suffered Non-Life-Threatening Injuries In The Incident

An FG-1D Corsair piloted by veteran RCAF fighter pilot and former NRC test pilot program head John Aitken was involved in a runway excursion Wednesday that left him with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident occurred at Gatineau Executive Airport in Ottawa, Canada about midday on Wednesday, according to the Ottawa Citizen newspaper.

Aitkin was flying the Robert Hampton Gray Goodyear FG-1D Corsair, which saw action during WWII and the Korean War. Aitkin was landing the plane following his planned 30 minute flight when it veered off the runway for an unknown reason.

Paul Tremblay, the chief mechanic at Vintage Wings of Canada, told the paper that while the aircraft was damaged in the incident, he is sure it can be made airworthy again.

The plane was scheduled to fly during the Thunder Over Michigan air show next month, but it is too badly damaged to be able to make that performance, Tremblay said. The airplane was one of 10 rare airworthy Corsairs that were on the schedule for the show.
