Speeding To Kitty Hawk

Gulfstream IISP Makes LA-Kitty Hawk Run In Record Time

A Gulfstream IISP business jet approaching for a flyby at Kitty Hawk (NC) Monday set a new world speed record, flying from Los Angeles to Kitty Hawk in 3 hrs 48 min; average speed of 631 mph.

Flown by renowned pilot Clay Lacy, this is his 29th World Record. Clay's previous records include World Speed Records from Los Angeles - Paris and Moscow to Los Angeles aboard this same Gulfstream IISP in 1995 and the Absolute Around the World record in 1988 flying a Boeing 747.

On board with Clay was Airshow/Test Pilot Bob Hoover, famed P-61 Black Widow test pilot John Myer and Joe Clark, founder and CEO of Aviation Partners, the company that developed the new technology Blended Winglets which are on the Gulfstream IISP. KTLA Channel 5 Los Angeles television anchorman Hal Fishman, a pilot and a member of Clay's team on many previous World Speed Record flights, was onboard, also.

Clay and the other pilots onboard decided to establish today's record from Los Angeles to Kitty Hawk in honor and tribute to the Wright Brother's first powered flight 100 years ago.

With over 50,000 flying hours aboard just about every type of aircraft in the skies, Clay may well be the highest time pilot in the world.
