Stranger Than Fiction: Editorial Questions Native American Names On Military A/C

Washington Post Op-Ed Says That 'Apache, Lakota, Chinook' And Others Are 'Racist'

You could almost see it coming ... like a fast-closing target on a head-up display. A recent editorial in the Washington Post says that the U.S. military’s helicopter designations of Apache, Chinook, Lakota, Cheyenne, and Kiowa are a "greater symbolic injustice" than the name "Redskins."

The column by Simon Waxman of the Boston Review appeared in the Post a week ago Thursday, calling the names "propaganda" that needs to end. Waxman also cites Black Hawk and Tomahawk as being offensive to native Americans, as well as naming military operations such things as "Geronimo" ... the operation that ended the life of Osama bin Laden.

The Washington Times reports that readers of a military news aggregator Doctrine Man have posted comments critical of the editorial. The website's moderator said that, rather than being derogatory, the names of the platforms "convey strength, honor, and courage."
