AOPA Donates $2,500 To West Gardiner Fire Dep't

To Replace Equipment Damaged This Month

When social network website developer Jeanette Symons and her 10-year-old son, Balan, died in the crash of a Citation business jet on February 1, one little-known ancillary loss was some of the gear used by first responders.

The West Gardiner, ME volunteer fire department had equipment ruined by exposure to jet fuel at the scene, reports the Kennebec Journal.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association has committed to a donation of $2,500 dollars to help cover costs of replacing the gear. AOPA spokesman Chris Dancy notes Jeannette Symons was a member of the pilot advocacy organization.

"Every pilot knows his or her life may well be in first responders’ hands if the worst happens," said AOPA President Phil Boyer. "We truly appreciate the diligence of the West Gardiner volunteer firefighters and the respect they showed the pilot and her son, and we want to make sure they have the equipment they need the next time they have to roll out."

Fire chief Ken Stackpole told the paper the new gear has already been ordered.
