Japanese Paraglider Soloes Onto 66kV Power Line

Radio failure prevents instructor from communicating with student

Japan's NTV reports that a paraglider on her first solo flight near Hiroshima became entangled with a 66,000 volt power line some 100 feet above the ground. The female pilot, 23-year-old Akiko Morito, was left dangling from the power lines for nearly four hours before rescuers were able to free and lower her to the ground.

A helicopter was summoned from the local fire department, a one rescuer was lowered to where the paraglider was precariously hanging from the cables. He attached himself to Morito and then cut the parachute cords, allowing the helicopter to lower her to safety.

Morito's paragliding instructor stated that her radio had failed, and he was unable to give her instructions during her flight. She veered off-course, and landed on the wires. Shortly after the accident the power authority cut power to the wires so that she -- and her rescuers -- would not be electrocuted.
