Pilot Of Plane Reported Stolen From Midland Fatally Injured

Impacted A Cement Plant Silo In West Texas

A Cessna 150 that was reported stolen from the Midland, TX airport crashed into a cement plant silo in west Texas June 1, resulting in the fatal injury of the pilot.

The person flying the plane has been identified by the Texas Department of Public Safety as 45-year-old Clayton Ray Chennault of Goldsmith, TX, according to the Associated Press. He worked for the company that owned the plane and used it for pipeline inspections.

The website everythinglubbock.com reports that Larry Mercer, the owner of the aircraft, said Chennault did not have permission to fly the plane at night, which is when the accident occurred.

The wreckage of the plane wound up hanging from a tower at the Cemex plant near Odessa. Chennault was the only person on board at the time of the accident.
