UAV Impacts Building In St. Louis

Operator Has Not Been Located, Authorities Say

There is quite a manhunt going on for the operator of a DJI Phantom 2 quadcopter that impacted the tallest building in St. Louis on Monday.

The aircraft hit the side of the Metropolitan Square building and was found on a 30th floor balcony by a security guard, according to television station KMOV.

Not discovered, however, was the operator of the aircraft, which can be acquired for about $500 on the Internet. Local and federal authorities are looking for the person that owns the UAV ... they have a few questions.

There was no indication as to the purpose of the flight. Authorities did now say whether the camera was operating when the aircraft hit the building, or if any video was recorded.

Missouri has no laws specifically governing the use of UAVs, but the FAA, as we know, takes a dim view of their use for "commercial" purposes. We'll have to wait until the operator is found to know what he or she was doing with the aircraft.
