What's So Special About THIS F-16?

Air Force Pumps BILLIONTH Pound Of JP-8

As those of us in the piston end of things are only vaguely aware, jets measure fuel less often in gallons than in pounds. An Air Force press release from June 30th shows an F-16 Viper (as its pilots know it; it's a Fighting Falcon to the bureaucracy) breaking off after taking the billionth pound of fuel that the Coalition Forces Air Component Command (the Coalition air forces) have delivered since Operation Iraqi Freedom kicked off in 2003.

This also includes fuel delivered to aircraft supporting Enduring Freedom over Afghanistan in that same period, but not OEF fuel before the start of the Iraq war.

The Air Force credited the photographer, Staff Sergeant Aaron Allmon II, but not the KC-135 tanker unit or the F-16 unit or pilot.

It's a timely reminder that the sharp end of the spear is still out there -- and so is all the rest of the spear that keeps the sharp end honed and, if necessary, deadly.
