BD-22 Down In Port St. Lucie, FL

Pilot, 67, Fatally Injured In Accident

A prototype BD-22 has gone down in Port St. Lucie, FL, resulting in the fatal injury of the pilot, the only person on board the airplane.

The pilot was identified as 67-year-old Joseph Loney of Port St. Lucie.

St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara told television station WPTV that witnesses said the plane was "in distress over the Indian River and attempted to make its way back to the airport, however ... it fell from the sky nose first."

Investigators say the plane had just departed from St. Lucie County Airport and was attempting to return to the field when the accident occurred.

Sheriff Mascara said that the pilot's body was found about 100 yards from the main wreckage of the aircraft. "Upon crashing impact the plane exploded," the Sheriff said.
