CIRA Sets Long-Term Development Goal

Hopes To Develop 700 Acres Of Airport-Owned Land

The Central Illinois Regional Airport (CIRA) at Bloomington-Normal, IL (KBMI) has established a long-term goal of developing 700 acres of land that is currently unused or leased for farming with an eye towards creating jobs and spurring investment.

The plan was introduced to the CIRA board last Thursday by The Farnsworth Group to the Bloomington-Normal Airport Authority. Pantagraph.com reports that eleven parcels are being considered for development into gas stations, restaurants, offices, and hotels. The idea is to encourage non-aeronautical developments and generate revenue, which CIRA executive director Carl Olson says will help keep airline operating rates down.

Other potential tenants would  be industrial, manufacturing, or other commercial businesses.

Neil Finlen, a principal for the Farnsworth Group, said the first short-term projects could be completed in as few as two years, with others following a 10-year timeline.
