Both Were Slightly Injured, But Walked Away

A Cessna 172 made an emergency landing on a road leading to the parking lot of a New Jersey mall parking lot Tuesday, slightly injuring the instructor and student pilot on board.

The aircraft had just departed from Essex County airport when the pilot reported the engine was running rough. The landed on the road to the Rockaway Townsquare mall in Rockaway Township, and ended up in a parking area near the entrance to a department store.

Multiple news sources report that witnesses said the airplane was not badly damaged. It clipped the tops of some trees before finally landing, and the pilot and student were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The 30-year-old 172 is registered to Genesis One Inc. in Paramus. It is the second emergency landing in New Jersey this month, and the second time that a plane has landed in the mall parking lot. ABC News reports the last time that happened was in 1996.
