Near-Miss In The Pattern Over Manchester, UK

Controllers File Report With Civil Aviation Authorities

Air traffic controllers in Manchester, England, have filed a report with civil aviation authorities after the pilot of a helicopter apparently ignored warnings from the tower Tuesdasy night and strayed right into the path of a landing Embraer 145.

Controllers say they're treating the near-miss as a "loss of separation" between the RJ and the helo, even though disaster was obviously averted.

Witness Dan Kirk told Manchester Online, "I saw the helicopter which was in and out the clouds above my house and I then saw the lights of the Embraer. The helicopter has gone across the path and I wondered why he had been allowed to go in front. I lived here for 15 years and I have never seen anything like this although the plane landed okay."

Both the Embraer and the helicopter, which was headed for the Barton Aerodrome, landed safely.
