OEMs, NBAA Provide COVID-19 Aircraft Cleaning Guidance

New NBAA Resource Page Dedicated To Aircraft Disinfection

Honeywell is the latest OEM to provide guidance on specific cleaning solutions for their products because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Honeywell’s Service Information Letter covers recommendations for cleaning solutions for their products installed in aircraft flight decks.

NBAA has posted Honeywell’s information, along with that of similar advisories issued by five other OEMs, on a new resource page dedicated to aircraft disinfection for the coronavirus.

“NBAA has gathered a wealth of useful resources related to aircraft operational considerations with the coronavirus online, including business aircraft disinfection guidance,” said NBAA Director of Technical Operations Stewart D’Leon. “We encourage members will take advantage of this information in maintaining their business aircraft in this COVID-19 environment.”

On the NBAA resource site, operators will find guidance on specific procedures and guidance for cleaning their aircraft by linking to advisories issued by Bombardier, Dassault, Embraer, Gulfstream, and Textron Aviation, in addition to Honeywell. Others will be added as they become available.

The web resource also links to a timely, easy-to-use and detailed NBAA publication titled Aircraft Disinfection and Cleaning Procedures (PDF), which summarizes:

  • CDC aircraft cleaning recommendations
  • Recommended personal protective equipment (PPE) during enhanced cleaning
  • General recommendations during the enhanced cleaning process
  • Recommended products
  • Interior disinfection procedures

It’s a good idea to check with your OEM about specific guidance; for instance, Honeywell’s Service Information Letter notes that solutions containing ethanol or sodium hypochlorite, as well as Clorox wipes are not recommended for use in any cleaning application on Honeywell products, due to paint degradation with continued use. The service letter lists more than a half-dozen other approved solutions for cleaning Honeywell products.

The NBAA publication on aircraft disinfection and cleaning procedures contains specific recommendations on products and procedures developed with NBAA members and professional aircraft detailers. Location-specific guidance is included for different areas of the aircraft, including galley and kitchen areas, cabin area and lavatory area. For flight deck and cockpit areas, it is recommended to check with the OEM due to the delicate nature of instruments, screens and components.

NBAA’s resource page also links to the full list of FAA and CDC precautions – SAFO 20003 – that air carriers and crewmembers should take to avoid exposure to COVID-19.
