Airborne 08.15.18: Bell 525 Milestone, Parker Solar Probe, NIMBY Nonsense

Also: Aerion Supersonic, Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, Australia GA Maintenance, Flight Training Legislation

The Bell 525 Relentless program is closing in on an anticipated 2019 certification, as yet another milestone was completed as part of a series of rigorous test protocols.

The Bell 525 program recently completed hot weather testing in Yuma, Arizona at temperatures up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit as well as high altitude operations to density altitudes of 14,000 feet. “We successfully completed hot weather testing last week in yuma, arizona,” said Troy Caudill, Chief Test Pilot, Bell 525 Program. “The aircraft performed very well and we are gathering test data for certification.” NASA’s Parker Solar Probe launched Sunday to begin its journey to the Sun. The spacecraft will transmit its first science observations in December. Roughly the size of a small car, the spacecraft lifted off at 3:31 a.m. EDT on a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket from Space Launch Complex-37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. At 5:33 a.m., the mission operations manager reported that the spacecraft was healthy and operating normally. It’s the epitome of NIMBY nonsense and ignorance... Questions have been raised about a skydiving operation by a community group which wrongfully claimed that skydiving aircraft may be interfering with efforts to fight the Holy Fire in the Cleveland National Forest. The FAA initiated an investigation after the aero-ignorant group, which runs a social media page named "What's Up Lake Elsinore," questioned why Skydive Elsinore was operating while firefighting aircraft were scooping water out of the lake to fight the 22,000-acre wildfire. But FAA spokesman Ian Gregor reported that a Cal Fire captain said the skydiving flights were not interfering with the firefighting effort. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
