Airborne 09.20.19: FAA Admin To Fly MAX Sim, Chine Drone Ban, SpaceX

Also: Iridium And OneWeb To Collaborate, USCG Rescue, New NASAO Board Members, API Claims Fuel Save

FAA Administrator Stephen Dickson is planning to travel to Seattle to personally fly a 737 MAX sim prior to the airplane's recertification.

Dickson said that he plans to make the trip this week in order to make an evaluation of software changes to the airplane's MCAS, which has been implicated in two accidents earlier this year leading to a worldwide grounding of the airliner. Dickson, a former airline pilot, will also meet with Boeing officials in Seattle. He said the FAA has no firm timeline for a return to service for the 737 MAX. Even drone politics are getting ugly... Senators Rick Scott (R-FL) , Chris Murphy (D-CT), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) have introduced the American Security Drone Act of 2019, which prohibits the U.S. Government from purchasing drones manufactured in countries identified as national security threats like Iran and China. SpaceX is attempting to buy as much property as it can in Boca Chica, TX, a small village near the company's south Texas test facility. The company's initial plan was to build a full-scale spaceport to launch payloads into orbit from the Texas coast. SpaceX has been using its Boca Chica facility for testing of its Starhopper prototype, which recently flew to an altitude of 500 feet from a concrete pad just 1.5 miles from the nearest residence in the village. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
