Three Lost In Lancair Downing Near Falcon Field

Pilot Reported Mechanical Problems

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 04.23.08 1100 MDT: The Wednesday morning downing of a Lancair IV-P shortly after takeoff from Falcon Field (FFZ) in Mesa, AZ resulted in the loss of all three people onboard.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said the homebuilt aircraft was cleared to return to FFZ after controllers saw smoke coming from the plane. Local news reports add the aircraft's pilot reported mechanical problems before the plane crashed in an orange grove near the airport.

"At first the pilot banked left toward the shopping center and then he must have realized that he wasn't going to make it and turned to his right and went down into the orange grove," witness Antonio Gonzales told the Arizona Republic, as reported by UPI.

The single-engine aircraft (type shown below) took off from FFZ at 0710 MST, and was believed to be heading to John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, CA.

No information about the identities of those onboard the plane has been released.
