New Burbank Terminal Approved By Voters

Nearly 70 Percent Vote In Favor Of The Measure

One of the items on the ballot in Burbank, CA Tuesday gave about 104,000 residents of the city the opportunity to voice their opinion on whether to build a new terminal at the Bob Hope Hollywood-Burbank Airport (KBUR). And when the polls closed, 69 percent had voted in favor of the measure, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The new facility would be a 14-gate terminal planned for either the northeast section or the southwest corner of the airport.

According to the McClatchy news service, airport officials have favored construction of a 355,000-square-foot terminal on the parcel in the northeast section of the property. They say the existing terminal does not meet earthquake codes or FAA standards. But residents say they are concerned that the measure was rushed to the ballot, and that the measure would erode the public's input into matters relating to the airport through such ballot initiatives.

The initiative also creates a requirement that a supermajority of the nine-member commission is needed for the approval of such things as land acquisition, increasing the number of gates, and long-term contracts at the airport.

There has also been a concern that the new terminal could lead to more flights at KBUR, but the airport authority and the FAA have both said that building a new terminal would not lead to more traffic at the airport. Airport officials say that there will be multiple public meetings held to get input on the proposal.
