A rare appearance by the Lockheed VC-121A “MacArthur Bataan” is scheduled for this year's Sun 'n Fun 2024, granting attendees a chance to see one of the last 2 survivors of the type. MacArthur Bataan, manufactured in 1948, cuts a familiar cold war figure as a classic rendition of a 4-engined prop airliner. The quintessentially post-war design language has yet to be seen again, with a distinctive tri-tail design, sloping roofline, rounded wing, and 4 monstrous radial engines. Blackbushe Air Day Performances Available Worldwide

British disability support org Aerobility announced another iteration of "Aerobility Live", a livestreamed version of its performance from Blackbushe Airport. The livestreaming aspect is a new addition to their yearly tradition, a twist that came courtesy of COVID-era lockdowns that is now here to stay. This year will see the return of a live audience, adding some helpful sense of background energy and vitality to the performance. Aerobility Live will take place simultaneously alongside Blackbushe Air Day, with the crew sporting a site to display the streaming show around the world.

Academy of Model Aeronautics Publicizes US Drone Soccer Partnership

The Academy of Model Aeronautics reiterated a partnership it's held iwth the US Drone Soccer program, drawing additional attention to the group's STEM-focused educational opportunities. The AMA boosted a statement from USDS announcing preparations for the first District Championships next month, marking off a big milestone in the fledgling activity organization. Americans already have something to be proud of, as the winners of the recent FAI F9A Drone Soccer Open International World Cup Qualifier hailed from Long Beach, California's Sato Academy. The US National Team took 1st and 2nd place.

FAA Publishes SNF 2024 Procedures

Procedures, Restrictions and More Give SUN 'N FUN Attendees Plenty of Homework

The FAA has published the notice and preflight info for this year's Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo, getting aviators ready for a jaunt down to Lakeland, Florida. The notice establishes arrival and departure procedures from April 8th to the 14th, with more than a few changes to normal traffic patterns in effect. To ensure clear and concise comms with ATC, the FAA says, pilots should carry a copy of the notice aboard their aircraft at all times. Daily airshows will preclude arrival traffic until ~45 minutes after they finish, and the airport is fully closed after the night airshow. Flagmen and radio frequencies are quite likely to make an appearance once again.

New Imagery Explorer to Look at the Galaxy in UV

A new NASA mission to examine the breadth of spaceborne ultraviolet light will take the form of a Medium-Class Explorer and space telescope under the UltraViolet EXplorer or UVEX program. The endeavor is targeted to launch in 2030 as the next astrophysics-focused mission from the agency. The finished UVEX is expected to pivot quickly between sudden sources of ultraviolet light in the universe, capturing the explosions that follow bursts of gravitational waves that follow the merging of neutron stars.

Illinois Aviation Academy to Host Tuskegee NEXT's Summer Program

Summer Camp Comes to Spartans Home

Tuskegee NEXT, a 501c3 non-profit, has found a host for its Summer Aviation Program at the Illinois Aviation Academy. The opportunity is aimed at individuals from underprivileged backgrounds from 18 to 20, offering them a free training program to break into the aviation world. The no-cost program has seen the majority of its prior cadets move on to complete a solo flight, with almost just as many obtaining their PPL.

Next-Gen Grading Tools Will Look to Assess More Ineffable Aspects of Pilotage

An FAA grant to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University staff is expected to help "develop more effective training programs that integrate pilots’ technical skills, such as operating aircraft controls, and non-technical skills, like decision-making and CRM." The work will be spearheaded by Barbara Holder, a Presidential Fellow at the school. She sat to speak about the million-dollar grant with ERAU marketing staff, describing her team's 3-year study in both purpose and outlook.

NTSB Prelim: Lockwood Air Cam

(Aircraft) Impacted A 197 Ft Meteorological Evaluation Tower (MET)

On January 29, 2024, at 1441 central standard time, a Lockwood Air Cam, N315GW, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Ranchitos Las Lomas, Texas. The pilot and passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. According to family members, the pilot often conducted flights above the family ranch in his helicopter before he finished building the Air Cam in September 2023. Since September, the pilot flew the airplane 93.7 hours with many of the flights conducted around the family ranch.
