Attempted Overflight Of Disputed Islands Leads To Rising Tensions In Korea

Japanese Plane Was Chased Off By South Korean Fighters

What started as an apparent attempt by a Japanese general aviation pilot to overfly two disputed islands in the East Sea is mushrooming into a full-blown diplomatic dispute.

As ANN reported Tuesday, a single-engine airplane flying from Japan's Osaka Airport attempted to overfly the Dokto Islands, two uninhabited spits of land between the Korean peninsula and Japan, claimed by both countries.

The aircraft, registered to a Japanese newspaper, was apparently on a photo mission over the islets when it was denied permission to enter the Korean Air Defense Interdiction Zone (KADIZ) covering the islands.

South Korean military authorities said they warned the Japanese plane away as many as four times before scrambling a flight of four F-5Es to intercept. The Japanese aircraft turned away when the Korean warplanes came within 30-miles.

"The Dokto issue, which is directly linked to our territorial sovereignty, is the foremost issue in the Seoul-Tokyo relationship," South Korea's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Ban Ki-moon said during a weekly press briefing. "In this sense, I clearly state that we will deal sternly with the issue to protect our territory."
