Classic Aero-TV: Safety Tip - Bryan Neville, Managing Stress

From 2009: FAASTeam Outreach Manager Discusses External Stress

On September 2nd, 2009, the American Bonanza Society started its 40th annual convention in Salt Lake City.  Featuring over 50 hours of seminars directed towards Beech enthusiasts and owners alike, the five-day event included educational classes, speakers, and social activities for attendees.

During the event, the ABS invited Bryan Neville, acting National Outreach Manager for FAASTeam, to speak about decision making for the pilot community.

As Neville explained, capable decision making is a crucial aspect of risk management for pilots.  Most accidents caused by pilot failure are triggered by the number one impediment to good decision making:  stress.  While a small amount of stress does help raise awareness levels, too much stress (be it too much stress over a given period time, or too much initial stress) drastically degrades performance abilities.

While it is impossible to completely eliminate stress in one’s life, pilots can gain the knowledge and preparation ahead of time to make sure that stress does not have a debilitating effect in the cockpit.

Join Aero-TV as Neville explains how pilots can maximize their safety and well being by recognizing the effects of stress and developing successful coping mechanisms for when stress does occur.
