Airborne 08.10.16: B-29 Doc Update, Airlander 10, Amazon Jets

Also: Airport Funding, AMA President Bob Brown, Qantas, Float Plane Theft, TriFan 600, Space Artifact, A-10s

It’s been about four weeks since the B-29 named ‘Doc’ flew for the first time after a 16 year restoration project, and the Doc restoration crew is working to plan the historic warbird’s second flight.

Jim Murphy, Doc’s Friends restoration project manager, said on the project blog, “Over the past few weeks, we’ve been combing through all of the airplane’s systems and control surfaces checking to see how things behaved during the first flight. We’ve also been reviewing gauge readings that were captured by video during flight and so far, everything has been rock-solid.” When a new aircraft rolls out for the first time it’s always a big deal, but when the world’s largest aircraft, the Airlander 10, made its first appearance last month it actually floated out. Being the largest aircraft in the world, exiting the hangar was a very delicate operation because of close clearances with the hangar structure. It took around 5 minutes for the Airlander to clear the hangar and then a further 30 minutes to be towed to rest at the primary mast site. The first branded Amazon Prime air cargo Boeing 767 has been publicly unveiled with a flyover of the Seafair Air Show Parade in Seattle, Washington. The airplane, named Amazon One, is one of 40 that Amazon has agreed to lease through air cargo partners Atlas Air and ATSG. There are currently 11 dedicated airplanes flying for Amazon as of today with additional airplanes rolling out over time. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
