Crew Safe After Ejecting

A US Navy S-3B Viking crashed Thursday near Athens (GA). The two-man crew was able to eject safely and was later recovered by search teams.

Navy officials say the aircraft departed NAS Jacksonville at approximately 8:51 a.m. (EDT) Thursday. It disappeared from radar sometime shortly after 11:00 a.m. Military investigators are trying to determine the cause of the accident.

The Lockheed-Martin S-3 has a long history, dating back to the 1960s. It was originally developed as a sub-hunter and maritime patrol aircraft. Now, although the Viking is still rated for air-to-air combat, it's been largely relegated to aerial refueling duties and reconnaissance.

Although the Navy says there were only two crew members on board the S-3, the aircraft normally carries a crew of three.
