Lockheed Martin Team Selected To Compete For AWIPS

Contract valued As High As $330 Million Over 10 Years

Lockheed Martin says its team was selected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) to compete in the next phase of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS). The AWIPS contract award is expected in July 2005 and will be worth an estimated $330 million over a 10-year period.

Lockheed Martin is teamed with Honeywell Technical Solutions Inc. and other subcontractors.

AWIPS is an integrated system that collects observation, sensor, and model data input from radar systems, weather satellites and other modeling systems. This meteorological data is processed into weather products and disseminated for weather forecasting, tracking and reporting. Integrated graphic displays and interactive software provide meteorologists with timely, accurate weather-related information.

"We are extremely pleased to have been selected by NOAA and NWS to participate in this next competitive phase," said John Mengucci, Lockheed Martin vice president and general manager for Department of Defense Systems within the Integrated Systems & Solutions business area. "Lockheed Martin has made great strides in developing industry-leading weather and navigational technology and systems. We look forward to working with the NWS to develop a winning solution that meets the AWIPS mission and program objectives."

In early December, the Lockheed Martin team met with government officials to discuss their mission, strategic goals, and objectives, as well as gain insight into the current AWIPS system. The team also anticipates being able to identify specific technical and functional requirements that will support a workable AWIPS solution under a mission-focused partnership with NOAA/NWS.
