ANN News Editor Tom Patton spent some time talking with Chris Holder of Concorde Battery while at EAA AirVenture 2013. Tom asked Chris to give us some information about the lithium-ion battery.
Chris said the important thing about a lithium-ion battery is that it’s lightweight, and in aviation lowering the weight is really important. Chris added that it is not only lighter but it also adds performance. Put the two together and it’s a product that aviation is certainly interested in. In a higher end general aviation airplane like a turboprop, the lead/acid battery can weigh as much as 92 pounds. A lithium-ion battery may weigh half that much and supply one third more power.
However, Chris goes on to say that no matter how good the lithium-ion batteries perform, they have problems. Recent history has shown that they can overheat, catch fire, and be hazardous. Chris said in his opinion they are not ready for aviation yet. This video goes on to explain how advances in the future may change the picture of what kind of battery we use in our airplanes.
